Who we are

What Is TUI Travel PLC?

In 2007, TUI Travel PLC was born. It’s the world’s largest holiday company, taking more than 30 million people away on holiday. It’s made up of some of Europe’s biggest travel brands, including Nouvelles Frontieres in France, Arke in Holland and Fritidsresor in Scandinavia to name but a few. The organisation has a fleet of 150 planes, flying to around 180 countries. What’s more, it employs 48,000 people around the globe, with its corporate headquarters based in Crawley, England. In terms of its structure, TUI Travel is split into four sectors – Mainstream, Specialist & Emerging Markets, Activity and Online Destination Services.

Where Do Thomson & First Choice Fit In?

In Britain, the creation of TUI Travel brought together two of the biggest names in travel, Thomson and First Choice. They come under the Mainstream wing and are collectively known as TUI UK & Ireland. Their head office is based in Luton, Bedfordshire. In terms of facts and figures, they serve 7.5 million holidaymakers, have 19,000 staff and tally up 880 travel shops and hypermarkets the length and breadth of the country.

Thomson Airways

The link-up of Thomson and First Choice also brought together the travel giants’ respective airlines - Thomsonfly and First Choice Airways. The result is a brand new airline called Thomson Airways. Its planes fly to destinations round the world from 21 UK airports.

Thomson Airways is part of TUI Travel PLC, an international company based in the United Kingdom. Other websites that you might find useful include: Car Hire Market, a car hire market company and Thomson, a company specialising in holidays.

Efficient Flying

We all know that flying impacts the climate through carbon dioxide emissions produced during a flight. We’re passionate about providing you with the best possible service on our flights – but, just as importantly, we are doing everything within our power to run the most efficient fleet we can.

We’ll be the first company in the UK to launch the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which promises a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and noise reduction.

In the meantime, we’re reducing our emissions by making our fleet as efficient as possible. For example, we’re reduced the weight of our aircraft by carrying the correct amount of fuel, fewer catering accessories and less non-essential engineering equipment. And wherever we can, we use one engine instead of two to taxi around the airport on arrival.

All this work means that our airline saved a whopping 34,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in a single year – that’s the equivalent of taking nearly 10,000 family-sized cars off the road for a year. And in 2009 we were recognised as Britain's Most Environmentally Responsible Airline by the British Travel Awards.
